In the landscape of mental health treatment, the terminology and classifications of medications have undergone significant evolution. One notable shift is the rebranding of medications and the significant amount of funding that went into pushing the idea that all mental or emotional health issues are caused by a chemical imbalance in the brain, and need chemicals to resolve. The rebranding of tranquilizers to anti anxiety medications, for example, took a medication that was prescribed to less than 5% of the population to the list of top 5 medications prescribed today.
While there is always a place for modern medicine and pharmaceuticals, the funding spent on pushing Big Pharma as opposed to supplying resources and education on body based, somatic, and holistic healing modalities creates a dynamic where people are finding themselves not only dependent on medications, but often times needing more medication to treat the side effects of the primary medication, all while knowing that if these medications become unaffordable and they stop their medication, they will not have gained any true healing that is independent of the chemical supply, but will also face adverse reactions to coming off of their prescription.
As our society has started to seek a better, cleaner, and more effective way to address mental and emotional wellness, we are now seeing the irrefutable benefits of “alternative” healing. In other words, we are largely walking back towards the ancient wisdoms of healing, and putting ourselves, rather than big companies, back in power.
Somatic healing practices, including breathwork, trauma release techniques, yoga, somatic shaking, ice baths, and meditation, offer profound benefits for physical and emotional well-being. These approaches focus on the mind-body connection, helping to release stored trauma, reduce chronic tension, and regulate the nervous system. Breathwork, for example, can activate the parasympathetic nervous system, promoting relaxation and emotional release while improving respiratory function and stress management. Ice baths enhance circulation and reduce inflammation, fostering resilience and mental clarity. Meditation cultivates mindfulness and self-awareness, enabling individuals to process emotions and achieve a state of balance.
Together, these practices empower individuals to heal deeply, manage stress effectively, and restore harmony between the mind and body.
