In 2023, I traveled to Nairobi for the International Breathwork Conference.
It was life changing.
Along my journey I had the privilege of meeting locals, seeing some beautiful landscape, and visiting some nearby schools. I spent a few days at Eldema Letap Academy (ELA) and was completely enamored with the children! I had the opportunity to sit down with Reverend John Kibali, who is the director of the school, a pastor, and also works as an uber driver to help bring in additional funding. We spoke a lot about the schools’ main areas of need, and the roadblocks they face. (I have a recorded interview with him so you can listen for yourselves!)
ELA is unique in the fact that it both provides a feeding program to the children and teachers, who may not be able to afford eating at home, but it also takes in children with different or special learning needs. The commitment and love within this community is palpable, teachers continue to show up even if they haven’t been able to receive pay, and some students who can, support the students who don’t have any financial resources to pay for school.
After spending a few days playing with, eating with, and learning with and from these children- I knew that my heartstrings were being pulled tightly to help. The impact was so profound that upon having dinner that night back at the conference center, I began to cry realizing how much food I serve myself that goes uneaten and then is thrown away. We have all been told “eat your food- there are starving children in Africa” but the reality is just that, and it runs so much deeper than just those words. I would love to begin to organize visits to the school for those who can donate and help fundraise! (In the interview Rev John mentions his frustrations with using big organizations for volunteers and support, so we are looking to keep our donations made through my company Venmo which will be wired to the schools’ bank account and a receipt of receival will then be issued).
